Inspire Me Thursday - Crayon Art: Part two
Posted Monday, May 19 at 9:23 pm by Kirsten
I just couldn’t finish up with this “crayon art” prompt from Inspire Me Thursday without trying this - I created this piece by melting crayons (well, oil pastels but close enough) and dripping them on to a piece of paper (I painted the background with acrylic paint first):
Of course, this isn’t the first time I’ve played around with melted crayons…
I remember very distinctly one winter morning when my brother and I were little, we woke up before mum and dad. We sat up next to the old oil heater and for some reason came up with the idea of creating our own multi-coloured crayons: by melting them on the heater and mixing the colours together.
Of course, we didn’t quite perfect the process of catching the melted wax - so basically mum got up to find wax crayons melted all over the heater and into the carpet. Let’s just say, we never tried that little trick again.
This time around I was a little more sensible in my approach, and I melted the wax with a teaspoon and a candle - and it still felt a little naughty.

Looks like this one might be slightly 3-dimensional in the original. Is that correct?

Yep - the blobs of melted oil pastel do give it a 3D effect

What a story! It must have been quite a colorful mess! I love what you did here - it has a great feeling of energy - like little bursts of color!

you made me laugh with the vision of melting the crayons on the heater…and that practice paid off…you’re pretty darn handy with melted wax!

I tried melted wax crayons too …It was not easy to work the wax and I find that the colors mixed up more than I would have liked. Yours are so well defined. It looks very nice.

Oh wow what a spectacular result! Making it into a bunch of flowers is a great idea and interpretation.

Hey Kirsten, I recall you practicing this method on the carpet when you were about 7 years old. This result is a bit better though.
